MISSION STATEMENT & COMPANY HISTORY:

The Alternate Theatre's mission is three-fold:

  • To bring the best of contemporary Canadian drama to New York City audiences
  • To explore works from the world's theatrical canon to inform and encourage an ongoing social dialogue
  • To promote the development of the emerging professional theatre artist in New York City

Founded in 2001 in Montréal, Quebec, The Alternate Theatre quickly became one of the city's most talked-about independent theatre companies. Originally created to introduce new American playwrights to Canadian audiences, The Alternate Theatre proudly presented Canadian premieres of Suzan-Lori Parks' Venus and Naomi Iizuka's Language of Angels. Other productions included Constance Congdon's post-modern comedy Tales of the Lost Formicans and W/O U I'm Nothing, an original musical drama by Alternate Theatre founder and Artistic Director Kareem Fahmy.

Now located in New York City, The Alternate Theatre's mission has evolved to include primarily the presentation of work by contemporary Canadian playwrights.  The Alternate Theatre believes that theatre can enlighten, entertain and educate and endeavours to create an environment in which theatre-goers of diverse backgrounds and interests can gather as one community.
